Aden, 4 – 6 February, 2006

 

Under the auspice of His Majesty, The President of the Republic, Ali Abdullah Saleh, under the motto “To strengthen the role of women in science, knowledge and development”, an International Conference about Women, Science & Development, during the period, 4 – 6 February, 2006, in the University of Aden, organized by the Women Research & Training Center, and Yemeni Women Association for Science & Technology, and supported by Nuffic Organization and the Embassy of Netherlands. The Conference was attended by His Highness, Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Abdul Wahab Raweh, Professor / Dr.Yahya Al-Shuaibi, Governor of Aden, Professor / Dr. Abdul Karim Yahya Rasae, the Rector of Aden University, Chairman of the Preparatory Council of the Conference. The opening ceremony was inaugurated by recitation from the Holy Quran. It was followed by a speech given by Dr. Rokhsana Mohamed Ismail, the Director of Women Research & Training Center, Chairperson of the Association. Dr. Rokhsana clarified various issues relating to the women’s role in the field of science and development. Then, Mrs. Joyka Adami, gave a speech on behalf of the Dutch Embassy, and clarified the field of support presented by the Government of Holland to the Yemeni Government, and mainly women issues.

After that, Professor / Dr. Abdul Karim Yahya Rasae, the Rector of Aden University, Chairman of the Preparatory Council of the Conference, gave a speech commending in it the role of Yemeni Women, diagnosing the Arab and Yemeni women reality, pointing to the role of Women Research & Training Center in the University, hoping from the center execution of its scientific plans drawn in the work program.

Dr. Yahya Al-Shuaibi also gave a speech where he referred to the role of women in the fields of science and development, pointing to the role of Arab women generally and Yemeni women in particular. The speech ceremony was completed by a speech from the Minister of Higher Education, Professor / Dr. Abdul Wahab Raweh, where he referred to the education and jurisprudence problems and overcoming the masculine role in the Arab societies. After that, Dr. Abdul Wahab Raweh, inaugurated the exhibition for arts, women issues and handicrafts

During the three days the participants from nearly 15 foreign and Arab countries discussed 60 researches distributed to six main axes, showing the role of women in:

1)         Science and Technologies and Information Technology.

2)         Role of women in Education, Culture, Information and Politics

3)         Role of women in the Environment, and Economy Development.

4)         Gender and Health

5)         Gender and Personal Status Laws

6)         Women Studies horizons in the Arab land.

The Scientific Sessions started with a general session where lectures were presented by Professor / Dr. Nasser Zawya, Professor / Dr. Saleha Sunqor and Dr. Nageeb Al-Miswadi.

The Conference came out with the following resolutions and recommendations:

 

The participants in the International Conference about Women, Science and Development, condemn and disapprove the faulty practices of the Danish Journals towards Islamic Religion and the Prophet Mohammed, (God’s blessing and peace be upon him). Freedom does not mean harming and muddling and create hatred and animosity among peoples and religions, and all human beings should respect the religious feeling for nations, peoples and folks. That is why the participants ask the necessity of dialogue among the peoples and not to touch the religious blessed

I:   Education:

1)         Believing that education is considered as a main entrance for development, therefore, strengthening & widening of effective participation & increasing materialistic support enabling girls obtain education is deemed as life’s necessity, and should be given priority, so that on it is established the building and spreading of the real democratic education which will enable her achieve the noble objectives in the hope to create a coherent, forgiving and effective society. Also chances for qualifying the girls abroad should be increased.

2)         Education is an important factor in women development, and therefore more efforts should be made to eradicate illiteracy among women medium

3)         Coordination of all efforts for compulsory and free education and equal opportunities for both sexes.

4)         Comprehensive cooperation and contribution to improve the quality and standard of education at all levels.

5)         Educational policies should take in account to scientific and applied knowledge and skills.

6)         Give priority for women development and needs in the framework of the general plan.

7)         Adoption of the international conventions related to women issues. And verbalize Arab constitutions to execute its supporting clauses for Arab women.

8)         Support women capacity to coordinate between her right to work and her obligations towards her family through assistance and modification of adverse legislations.

9)         Establish special funds for the education of girls and young women who missed the opportunity of accessing basic education.

10)    Study of the actual situation that affect the progress of females in having their proper status in higher education and post-graduate level.

11)    Encourage studies on gender equity and its effect on improving the performance in higher education as a whole.

12)    Integrate gender concepts within curricula of Basic and Higher education.

13)    Continue the work and efforts towards opening the Higher Diploma and Master Programs in Women, Gender Studies and Development.

14)    Give females their right to be responsible for management of high education institutions.

II:  Health:

1)    To defend for the rights of all pregnant women in getting ante-natal care, and volunteer consultation for testing from AIDs and provide (suitable remedies) to protect them.

2)    Providing services and primary care for Mother & Child Health (MCH), in order to create a healthy & strong generation.

3)    Establish special fertility fund to help women in giving means of family planning, the matter which may participate in solving population problems.

4)    Raise public awareness of fertility problems through media, group discussions, workshops, etc.

III:  Water:

1)     Increase participation of women in water management as an ethical approach for sustainability, productivity of water projects and for social development.

2)     Ensure reaching of clean drinking water and reduce efforts exerted by women and children in fetching water for the families.

IV:  Women in Science & Technology:

1)     Establish a fund for women in Science & Technology, in order to encourage continuous women contribution in the field of science and technology.

2)    Establish a society for women in Science and Technology, to cover different specialties and be funded through co-operation with Local and International Organizations.

3)     Component of elementary science education such as primary health care, food nutrition, personal hygiene, income generation and how to manage income, should be incorporated in the curriculum.

4)     Strengthen the role of women in the information field give her chances to qualify and ensure provision of electronic services for both men and women at a low rate, especially to those studying in universities and schools.

V:   Women & Economy:

 

1)     Help women in the field of work in the civil society by participating in such associations and organizations in order to formulize a clear vision for their associations, which will help in creating and developing strategies in this regard.

2)     Helping women in the field of work and create effective and efficient network, through which knowledge and experiment can be exchange.

3)     Provide sufficient resources and correct conditions for woman to obtain loans and credits.

4)     Motivate Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations to formalize a friendly environment to enable them carry out their duties.

5)     Motivate the Government to change its system in connection with registration of trade works, which is complicated operation in Yemen.

 

VI:  Women & Law:

 

1)     To review the legislation and laws concerning woman, correct them to ensure security and incorporate real participation of woman in development, and that is by strengthening the role of national committee for woman who struggle to change various changes of Personal Status Law in corporation with concerned authorities.

2)     To carry out more educational studies and lectures revealing the risks of traditional marriage and utilize audio-visual means to play its role in this part.

3)     The participants recommend to reconsider the Arab Personal Status Laws in relation to accommodation in case of divorce, where accommodation should be provided to the wife, and maintained financially by the husband in case of her inability to bear the expenses for maintaining herself.

VII:  Arab Net Working and Scientific Corporation among Women Organizations:

In this respect, the participants recommend serious Arab Work towards alleviation of pungencies pressure practiced on Palestinian, Iraqi and Syrian peoples in general, and on women in those countries in particular.

1)     The participants of the Conference recommend on activating the role of Arab women in the Scientific and applied part through Arab Feministic Nets, and the existing Arab and International Organizations who are interested in those fields, whereas in this year three women scientific activities completed in the field of science and modern technologies, in Jordan, Syria, Bahrain and Sudan.

2)     Encourage carrying out of incorporated researches among Arab researchers, and look for sufficient fund to execute those researches which will serve the Arab women.

3)     To work seriously on making a work plan to renew the Arab Researchers’ Manual and look for sponsoring parties to execute the set-forth aspiration, and which will benefit the Arab women researchers and strengthen their relations with international organizations which are interested in scientific researches.

4)     Organize specialized scientific activities among Arab countries discussing women, science and development issues.

5)     To widen the field studies to include rural regions, as rural women in our Arab countries suffer a lot and attention should be paid to them.

6)     To rely on the trustable scientific resources when collecting statistics and data aiming to reach to the correct information, because information is the basic pedestal to change and improve policies.

7)     Activate the Feministic Arab Nets in the field of Science and Development.
