General Idea about the Information and Documentation Department

The information and documentation department is considered as one of the principal departments in the Women Research and Training Center (WRTC) in the University of Aden. This is a new department in the WRTC and is supported by NUFFIC funds. The library will be developed and an information unit will be established.

The Library

A well stocked library with literature on women issues and gender is important for several reasons:

• To improve the quality of education and research concerning woman issues and gender.

• For the higher diploma course and Master degree in Women studies and development. It is necessary to improve the library by supplying it with up to date books and references and equip the library with advanced and new technologies to document and record all the documents, books and references that exist in the library. The library will be connected to the website of the WRTC and to the internet, so that staff, students and other researchers can access the library from a distance. At present we try to realize the following:

1. To obtain more rooms to extend the library (waiting for the university to provide the rooms)

1. Supply the library with new books, journals and references concerning woman issues and gender (we bought some books but still have to buy a lot more, also awaiting a consultancy mission to the library).
2. Supply the library with two new computers with its peripherals and also to install a new software program (DATA BASE) in order to improve the recording of the documents from the library (to be implemented).
3. Connect the library directly to the website of the center and the internet (to be implemented).
4. Train the librarians in the library in order to qualify them to work in the library and use new technology (to be implemented).

2. To install the information unit

The center (WRTC) through funds of the NUFFIC project, will install the information unit, in order to use modern technologies to improving research and education. Main points are:

1. To get rooms to install the information unit (to be implemented)
2. To buy computers (20) to install the information unit (finalizing the process through the university)
3. To setup a network especially for the center (to be implemented)
4. To develop a website for the center on the internet (implemented)
5. To publish on the website the conference organized by the WRTC entitled: “Woman, Science and Development” (partly implemented).
6. To give lectures for students in the introduction of computers as part of a diploma courses in order to give them the basic knowledge about this important field and qualify them in research and their specific scientific field (to be implemented)
7. To start training sessions for women who never used computers before and learn them how to use internet; and for women who want to upgrade their computer skills (to be implemented),
